Safeguarding your teenagers - the dangers of echo chambers.
Social Media, whilst wonderful, can also have its dangers. One of those being ‘echo chambers’.
What is an echo chamber?
An echo chamber is an online phenomenon where people will only encounter people and opinions who are the same as their own – often harmful ones. These people all bounce these opinions and ideas off one another until eventually it becomes all any of the hear, like an echo in a chamber. This can be particularly harmful to young, impressionable teenagers, and these echo chambers tend to happen between incels and expel who are within what is now becoming known as ‘the manosphere’. These opinions are often misogynistic, racist, and homophobic, which can lead to harm for these minority groups especially in the real world. With an echo chamber, it is often a case of reinforcement through repetition, reducing exposure to diversity and people with different opinions and beliefs, and leading these young people to have an extremely narrow minded and dangerous view of the world.
What can you do as a parent?
As a parent, you can ensure you are monitoring your children’s social media usage. Have a look at who they are following and searching for, and what kind of content they post. It is also important to teach them about diversity, and encourage open conversations surrounding people who may differ from them, based on race, religion, sexuality, or gender.
